id Software, the original developers of the 1993 classic Doom, made a throwback to the original title with blasting demons at every corner. Despite being dark and gory, Doom never classified as horror game. Therefore, when Doom 3 switched the formula to more seriousness and moodiness, it felt far removed from the first two title's fast and bloody action at every turn.

The latest Doom looks like a 2016 update of the original with the founddational principles. Step into the boots of a tried and true musclebound marine. You challenge the beasts of hell as a lone gunman who fights against the incoming onslaught of the furious beasts from Hell. The fast-paced action makes a return to the 2016 title, and you can double-jump. You can also drop long distances and survive. Doom makes full use of the environment, the strafing, the jumping and you will maneuver around everything Hell throws at you.

Back by popular demand, the super shotgun makes a refreshing return, and the chainsaw dances in right behind it. The gore that made Doom a world-renowned title can be found. You will face enemies who have a "finish" state. As you approach your incapacitated monster, you can perform some bizarre finishing moves on them. While it sounds tasteless, it fits right in with Doom where you're crushing the demons of Hell. Most people who play Doom games don't come for the taste. Doom strikes all the right chords, and at its best, Doom was everything you might expect in the single-player campaign. You have to kill every demon on Mars, and it feels a lot like a Doom game but with much better graphics.

When this game goes downhill, however, you feel lost on an endless parade of searching enclosed rooms filled with demons snapping at your heels. Nevertheless, you get those hungry demons back by joyfully beating them with their own appendages. Once you kill an enemy, they will drop health packs. Like in past Doom games, your survival depends on those health kits because you do not regenerate health outside the combat. Slowly, you will gun your way to the UAC facility, and as you do this, you realize the reason for so many health packs. It lets you dive bomb your enemies in a combat style identical to the first two Doom games. Instead of hiding and picking off enemies one by one, Doom sends you into the thickest and worst crowds of demons imaginable. Your only chance of survival is to spray a barrage of bullets their direction.

The enemies in Doom could use more advanced tactics. Placing them in a room feels too much like a crutch, and it came from a time when enemy AI had no capability of surprising you with their tactics, but today, we have seen much smarter enemies when given the chance, and that aspect could use an upgrade.

Pros

  • Realistic graphics
  • Perfect controls and gameplay
  • Brings back the nostalgia of the 90s classic

Cons

  • The game starts to feel repetitive after a while
